Antoine Griezmann may have been suspended for Atletico Madrid’s Champions League clash against Liverpool tonight, but that did not stop him getting involved in the talk surrounding the game.

Jurgen Klopp’s side prevailed 2-0 on the night thanks to first-half goals from Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota which sent them through to the last-16, leaving Diego Simeone’s team in a three-way fight to secure second spot in the group.

Griezmann watched on in frustration after his red card in the reverse home fixture at the Wanda Metropolitano saw the Frenchman miss out on tonight’s game at Anfield.

The 30-year-old posted the tweet which translates into English as “Amarilla in Anfield”, which infers a degree of bias from referee Danny Makkelie, who was wearing yellow on the night.

One of the key decisions which went against the visitors on the night was Felipe’s controversial straight red card for a challenge on Mane.

It was initially uncertain as to whether the red was given for the initial foul on the Senegalese forward or for the dissent which followed, after the defender ignored the referee’s whistle on three separate occasions. UEFA confirmed it was for the tackle itself.

Meanwhile, Luis Suarez saw his goal ruled out after VAR intervened as José María Giménez – who headed the ball onto the Uruguayan for his shot – was in an offside position.

Griezmann’s reaction to the unfolding events was treated with more than a degree of cynicism, with many slating the Atletico forward for expressing his bitterness after losing the game.

Others were unclear as to what he was even talking about, referencing the classic track “Amarillo” by Tony Christie.

Atletico will hope to bounce back on Sunday when they travel to Valencia in La Liga, while Liverpool face West Ham United the same day.
